Semi-finals are a success at the Holland Regatta

Holland Regatta - Team GBR - Semi-finals are a success at the Holland Regatta
MEDEMBLIK, THE NETHERLANDS-(28-5-2005) The penultimate day of the Holland Regatta proved to be unlike any previous day so far in the series.  With 22 knots of breeze, numerous capsizes and semi-finals for four of the classes, today demonstrated just how exciting sail racing can be.

After completing three races in the morning, the 49er fleet was the first to hold its semi-final.  The top six boats, including two GBR Teams, set up on the starting line to sail several short races.  With each race lasting 10-15 minutes, there was a lot at steak for the sailors, as the boat that finished last faced elimination.  The result was a tight fleet battling to finish at the top.  Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks sailed well, but in the final race they capsized twice and finished last knocking them out of medal position.  Draper and Hiscocks will sail for their final position tomorrow.  Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes finished in the top three and kept from being eliminated, securing them a medal.

Commenting on today’s semi-final, Stevie Morrison explained, “The new semi-final format makes sailing more interesting and exciting for people to watch.  It was really hard racing and good fun, but any mistakes you made, you were punished for.  We were able to stay in the races and finish in a position that will allow us to sail in the finals.”

Pippa Wilson and Sheena Craig also had a good performance today.    Finishing in the top six, the pair went on to qualify for the semi-finals in the women’s 470.  At the time of going to press the women’s 470 were still competing to determine who went on to the finals.

Leigh McMillan and Will Howden also went to the semi-finals but got a last place after they had trouble with their mainsail at the start.  They too will sail for their final position on the last day.

Laser Radial sailor Lizzie Vickers had another fantastic day of sailing.  Just two days ago Vickers was lying in twenty fourth overall; at the end of today, Vickers has jumped onto the leader’s board and into third place.  Just ahead of her is Charlotte Dobson holding fast to her second place.

Sarah Ayton reclaimed pole position in the Yngling.  Ayton explained, “I am really pleased with the way we sailed.  After finishing fourth yesterday we really needed to get in there and have some good results.  We went out and secured a first and a second which put us back into leading position.”

The event continues through to Sunday 29 May.  Further information and results can be found on the event website www.hollandregatta.org.
